ARCS Australia launches national white paper to strengthen the clinical trials workforce
ARCS Australia has today released its new white paper, Strengthening Australia’s Clinical Trials Workforce: ARCS Clinical Research Workforce Capacity Summit Insights and Strategic Blueprint.
This report draws together the collective insights of clinical trial professionals, government representatives, universities, hospitals and industry gathered during the 2025 ARCS Clinical Research Workforce Capacity Summit. It highlights the pressures facing Australia’s clinical trials workforce, the opportunities for system-wide reform, and the practical steps needed to support a high-performing, future-ready profession.
As global competition for clinical trials intensifies, the white paper outlines why Australia must invest in coordinated training pathways, national standards, and a strong professional identity for trial coordinators, research nurses, CRAs and investigator teams. The report also showcases promising initiatives already underway across the country and presents a clear blueprint for scaling them nationally.
ARCS Australia CEO Dr Tim Boyle said the white paper provides a grounded and realistic pathway for reform.
“We have an incredibly committed and capable workforce, but they are working in a system that relies too heavily on goodwill and outdated structures,” Dr Boyle said. “If Australia wants to remain a top-tier clinical trial destination, we need to invest in the people who make trials possible. This blueprint sets out the practical steps that government, health services, industry and universities can take together to build a sustainable, skilled and respected clinical trials workforce.”
“Strengthening the workforce is not just an industry priority — it is essential for accelerating new therapies, improving patient outcomes, and ensuring Australia remains globally competitive.”

ARCS Australia will continue working closely with members, partners and policymakers to progress the recommendations and support a stronger, more coordinated national clinical trials workforce.
