NHMRC registration and certification

Synopsis    

How HREC registration and certification fit together, what is required for each, how our certification scheme intersects with and supports the National Mutual Acceptance Scheme (NMA) and some information about the new ACSQHC initiative to accredit HRECs.

Speakers

Jillian Barr, Director of Ethics and Integrity, NHMRC 
Jillian is the Director of Ethics and Integrity at NHMRC. Jillian’s work involves developing a range of ethics guidelines and research standards including the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. Jillian is responsible for research integrity maters at NHMRC as well as matters relating to Human Research Ethics Committees.

Hannah Hawkins, Assistant Director, Ethics and Integrity, NHMRC 
Hannah has a science background, completing her PhD at the University of Sydney. Her area of research was bioinorganic chemistry with a focus on biochemical interactions. Following her passion for medical research, Hannah has had roles in clinical trials administration and research ethics and governance. Recently, Hannah has worked in research investment and grants in the not-for-profit and higher education sectors. Hannah is now part of the Ethics and Integrity team at The National Health and Medical Research Council.

Jeremy Kenner, Expert Advisor – Ethics, NHMRC
Jeremy is the Expert Advisor for Ethics to the NHMRC. He is responsible for or contributes to a broad range of programs and projects related to health and research ethics, governance of research and clinical trials and provides advice internally and externally on these matters. Prior to his current role, Jeremy served as Ethics Coordinator at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne. Earlier in his career, Jeremy worked as a schoolteacher, practiced law, and conducted public education and research in bioethics in the United States. His academic background is in Anthropology, Theology and Law.
