This course is suitable for people who want to develop or refresh their basic writing skills and for anyone who feels that their written work does not reflect their overall level of professionalism and is keen to improve their ability in this area.

Course Overview:

This introductory one day course is designed to help you acquire the fundamental skills and knowledge needed to produce effective business documents and present a professional image as a writer. An extensive range of topics will be covered including essential aspects of grammar and style, writing in Plain English, writing letters and emails, document layout and proofreading. You'll consolidate your learning through individual and group exercises and will finish the day with a renewed interest in the English language and its power as a communications and customer service tool.

Course Highlights:

  • Effective Business Writing: key features of written English, informal-formal writing styles, benefits of writing effectively and business writing as a customer service tool
  • Tools and Planning: surveys online and other tools available to the business writer and explains how to plan writing tasks
  • Writing Style: covers the "building blocks" of writing including basic grammer, use of Active and Passive voices, spelling, punctuation, business vocabulary, writing in Plain English and form of address
  • Letters and Emails: business correspondence and email guidelines, standard professional layouts for 1- and 2-page letters, setting out information and use of tables, charts and graphics
  • Proofreading: the importance of proofreading as well as spell checking, common errors and areas where errors are often overlooked
